Aqua Voice Alternatives for Mac Dictation
Aqua Voice's screen-aware Avalon model is genuinely good with technical terms, but the product is cloud-only and subscription-only: Pro at $10/mo ($8/mo annual), Max at $30/mo, and a free tier that stops at 1,000 words. If you want local processing, offline use or a one-time price, here are five alternatives, Sotto first.

Why People Look for Aqua Voice Alternatives
Cloud-only means online-only
Aqua's Avalon model runs on its servers, so dictation dies without a connection — on flights, trains or locked-down networks. Sotto, VoiceInk and Flit all run models on the Mac itself.
The subscription outruns the one-time apps
Aqua Pro is $288 over three years on annual billing; Max is $864. Sotto is $49 once, VoiceInk $25–$49 once. The longer you dictate, the wider the gap.
Audio stays on your Mac
Aqua's Privacy Mode stops transcript storage, not cloud processing of your speech. Sotto's local models mean audio never leaves the Mac in the first place.
Switch to Sotto, Pay Once
Sotto is $49 once for up to 3 Macs with every feature and all future updates included. Local Whisper and Parakeet models keep your audio on your Mac, and the Sotto Assistant, local API and CLI are part of the license.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best Aqua Voice alternative?
For Mac users who want local, offline dictation at a one-time price: Sotto, $49 for up to 3 Macs. VoiceInk Solo at $25 is the cheapest local option for one Mac.
Is there a free Aqua Voice alternative?
Superwhisper's free plan gives unlimited local-Whisper dictation. Apple Dictation is free in macOS. Both lack Aqua's screen awareness.
Which alternative keeps my audio private?
Sotto, VoiceInk and Flit transcribe locally, so audio never leaves your Mac. Cloud apps (Aqua, Wispr Flow, Willow) process speech on their servers.
Which alternative is best for code dictation?
Flit indexes your codebase so identifiers come out right; Sotto handles code with rules and AI Functions. Aqua's screen awareness is the benchmark these aim at.
