Whisper is excellent, but it isn't the only option — and "apps like Whisper" can mean anything from a different model to a friendlier interface. Here are the alternatives worth knowing, whether you want better accuracy, more speed, or a real dictation workflow.
Alternative models
NVIDIA Parakeet
The strongest Whisper alternative for English. Parakeet is fast and highly accurate on Apple Silicon, often transcribing in a fraction of the time. We put the two head to head in Whisper vs Parakeet.
Cloud APIs (Google, Deepgram, etc.)
Cloud speech-to-text services are accurate and scalable, but they send your audio off-device and bill per minute. See Whisper vs Google Speech-to-Text for the trade-offs.
Alternative apps
1. Sotto — for dictation into any app
Sotto runs both Whisper and Parakeet locally and types into whatever app has focus when you hit a hotkey. Custom vocabulary, cleanup rules, 90+ languages, all on-device. $49 one-time, no subscription.
2. MacWhisper — for transcribing files
Drag-and-drop batch transcription with subtitle export. File-first rather than dictation-first. More in MacWhisper alternatives.
3. SuperWhisper — local dictation
A polished local-first dictation app with a modes system. The main difference comes down to pricing structure — see SuperWhisper alternatives.
4. Wispr Flow — cloud-based AI editing
Slick auto-editing of your speech, but processed in the cloud on a subscription. If that's a dealbreaker, see Wispr Flow alternatives.
5. Aiko — free file transcription
A free, no-frills on-device Whisper app for occasional file transcription. No dictation workflow, but hard to beat the price.
6. whisper.cpp — DIY
The free command-line route. Maximum control, zero hand-holding. Best if you're comfortable in a terminal.
How to choose
| If you want… | Pick |
|---|---|
| Talk into any app, no subscription | Sotto |
| Batch file transcription | MacWhisper |
| Maximum speed on English | Parakeet (in Sotto) |
| Free and occasional | Aiko / whisper.cpp |
Whatever you choose, prefer apps that run models locally — better privacy, no per-minute fees, and nothing to be deprecated out from under you. If a dictation workflow is what you're after, try Sotto for $49 one-time.
